Building an intentional morning routine is something that has always made such a significant impact on how my days begin. For me, starting my day off feeling rushed or “behind” really impacts my mood and energy. I’ve found that creating a supportive morning routine allows me to fill my own cup before I pour myself into my work.
In this post, I’m sharing my current morning routine, journal prompts to support you in exploring what a feel-good morning routine would look like for you, and then I’ve shared a whole bunch of ideas to help you begin to structure your own morning routine.
I hope this post inspires you to incorporate a supportive morning routine checklist for yourself!
My Current Morning Routine
My morning routine is ever-changing. There are many factors that impact how I choose to spend my mornings such as: my goals for the month, the season, and how I’ve been feeling. So it doesn’t make sense for it to be a prescriptive, “must-always-look-this-way” routine. I try to reflect on what my needs are in this current season. In the spring and summer months, I typically go on a morning walk; however, in the winter when it’s dark in the mornings, I shift my routine to better support my days. And for me, that looks like reading and journalling while sipping a coffee.
One thing that always stays consistent is building out my morning routines with intention.
For context, this is what my morning routine currently looks like:
6:30-6:45am – wake up, let the dog out and feed her, pour myself a glass of water with a sprinkle of Himalayan sea salt (this adds electrolytes and helps with hydration).
7:00am – pour a cup of coffee with a scoop of collagen added in (this is the collagen I use), read a book for personal or professional development for 20-30 minutes.
Here’s a roundup up some of my favourite personal development books!
7:30am – have a smoothie loaded with protein, healthy fats, fruit & veggies (my husband makes this for us both every morning – this is our blender, it’s really good!).
7:45am – journal or meditate for 15 minutes.
8:00am – shower and get ready for the work day.
9:00am – “arrive” at work (aka – move to my home office), check emails, organize and plan out my day.

If it’s more like a list of “should’s” and doesn’t leave you feeling filled up, it’s no longer self care.
How To Figure Out A Morning Routine That Works Best For You
After completing the journal prompts, go through all of Morning Routine Ideas and take note of the ones you’d be interested in trying and the ones that align with how you want your mornings to feel.
I’d recommend trying to choose some practices from a number of different categories, but your morning routine is yours and yours alone. So it needs to feel good to you. Your morning routine doesn’t need to look the same every day, because your needs aren’t the same every day. But begin to identify what your morning non-negotiables are and then build out from there.
Morning non-negotiables might be a specific wake up time that stays consistent, or something for your mind and body every morning.
Somedays, my body needs gentle movement and other days it’s a strength workout. Somedays I journal, other days I meditate. Learn to listen to your body each day, but create a ritual around what you want your mornings to look like and then protect that time.
This post is all about creating a morning routine checklist.
