Our house has a small “bonus room” that we always planned to turn into a cozy tv room when we were dreaming up plans for the house (aka – the “nest”). Since space was limited, the priorities were 1. a giant, comfy sectional; and 2. a media stand that was pretty and offered closed storage. I searched high and low for a media stand that I loved and kept coming up empty handed (mostly due to a limited budget paired with my taste for higher end pieces). While scrolling Instagram, I had seen others post about customizing Ikea cabinets in the kitchen with beautiful doors and that gave me the idea that maybe you could do the same with some of the Ikea media consoles.
I discovered Norse Interiors on Instagram and right away, knew that was the route I wanted to go. Customizing the Ikea Besta would give me the exact look I was going for (read: high end, realistic budget) and some caning was also on my wishlist. Now, in full transparency, I did reach out to Norse Interiors and inquire if they would be interested in working together on this project and they kindly agreed to send me some pieces to share with my audience. This post is not sponsored but the products were gifted.

Let Me Introduce You To Norse Interiors

Norse Interiors has a wide range of custom doors, legs, and hardware for a few specific Ikea pieces – The Besta, The Sektion, and the Malm. You purchase the box and hinges and any interior shelves you want from Ikea and then you purchase the other pieces from Norse in order to get a custom-looking piece at a much more affordable price-point.
This brand is an amazing small, family-run shop and I’ve truly fallen in love with their ethos and their mission to upcycle plain pieces into works of art in your home. You can read the founder’s story here if you want to learn more. Again, this isn’t sponsored and the brand didn’t request a blog post, I just find the story so inspiring and knew you would love learning about this option for your own homes!
How We Customized Our Ikea Besta
There were so many great options to choose from when we went to customize our Ikea Besta and I absolutely love how it turned out!
Here are the selections we made:
- These cane doors
- These legs
- These handles (not pictured, still need to install!)

On a similar note, I’m beginning to chronicle room tours and also noteworthy pieces in our home. Make sure to keep an eye on the Interiors tab for all updates!
