I am all about weekly rituals… but flowers might just be my favourite.
I first became mildly obsessed with flowers while planning our wedding. As I started to learn about different varieties and arrangements, it was like this whole world of beauty opened up to me that I had never before considered. Over the last year, picking up flowers, arranging them, and caring for them has become a bit of a hobby and something that brings me so much joy and is truly therapeutic. I like to pick them up near the end of the work week, there is something about this ritual that signals to my brain that it is time to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures the weekend will bring.
Some favourite varieties are Snapdragons, Scabiosa, Ranunculus, Dahlias, Cosmos, Lilacs, Wax Flowers, Sweet Peas, Yarrow, Spray Roses, and greenery like Italian Ruscus, Bay Leaves and Seeded Eucalyptus. I like to put one or two varieties in a vase and keep it simple.
A few tips and tricks
My eyes are naturally drawn to green, white and pink blooms. I love that straight-from-the-garden vibe of flowers that are loosely arranged, a bit unruly and the more whimsical, the better. They bring life to little corners of the house – a few of my favourite spots to put a vase of blooms is our coffee table, bedside table and entryway table.
When arranging them for the first time, I cut each stem at varying heights to bring more dimension and put them in the vase, trying out different combinations of stems/heights until I’m happy with the outcome. Make sure that no leaves are touching the water as they carry bacteria and will shorten the lifespan of your flowers.
I trim my flowers (at a 45° angle) every other day, give them fresh water and weed out anything that isn’t looking fresh.
Don’t be afraid to ask your local florist for help! They have so much expertise in this area and it can be a bit overwhelming to start out learning. I will often take screenshots of varieties I come across that I think are beautiful and then ask about them when I pop in. They are usually so happy to help and the more you ask, the more you will learn!
I’ve included links below to some vases that I love as well – I like to have a variety of vases of different heights and shapes as that completely transforms the look of the arrangement.
